As the title of the film makes clear, director Howard Alk's The Murder of Fred Hampton pulls no punches about what happened to the magnetic Black Panther chairman in 1969. The gritty, admittedly partisan documentary traces Hampton's all-too-brief career as a community organizer and time with the Illinois chapter of the BPP — and the brutal aftermath of the activist's slaying by Chicago police as he slept in his apartment. Much attention is paid to the local outpouring of grief and painfully flimsy murder investigation, and the film is a deeply moving portrait of another promising, if flawed, political leader of the '60s who left us all too soon.
