Last night was the jump off for Brooklyn based artist Aiko's new show, "Shut up and look", at the Brooklynite Gallery in brooklyn, ny. The gallery was filled front to back, with people pouring in and out of the backyard, which had been converted into a stage area. There old school djs spun hip hop classics ranging from late 70s the early 80s in front of a huge graffed-out mural commerating the legendary Soul Sonic Force, aka the guys that brought you that masterpiece of music, "planet rock". In the front of the gallery hung the original works by the artist, herself a brk native and original member of the artist group falie (google it). By weaving together American and Japanese pop icons and motifs reflective of feminine sensuality, political and religious imagery, and current events( such as he Beijing Olympics), she transforms white canvas into a black back alley door in Brooklyn, creating a poignant mural of her own life experience, and making a compelling commentary on contemporary urban life.
